Conflict, Continuity, and Change in Social Movements in Southeast Asia
Author: Abdul Rohman
Explores the persistence, transformation, and dissolution of social movements in Southeast Asia through a cultural lens. Examines two Indonesian peace movements—Kopi Badati and Filterinfo—emerging amid Christian-Muslim conflict in Ambon to illustrate how ideology, collective memory, interpersonal relationships, identity, and emotion sustain activism over time. Challenges resource-based and political opportunity theories by highlighting cultural factors as central to movement continuity and change. Demonstrates that while some movements disband after achieving their goals, others adapt and evolve.
